Price increase at Netflix

Netflix is hoping its subscribers will be willing to pay an additional $1 to watch the streaming platform’s content, which includes critically acclaimed originals like House of Cards and Orange is the New Black.

Canadians looking to sign up for Netflix’s new standard tier will now pay $9.99 CAD a month. The price hike is set to only affect new customers, with existing subscribers continuing to pay $8.99 a month until October 2016, when everyone will be moved over to the pricing model.

Netflix’s $7.99 a month basic plan, that only allows standard definition streaming from one device, will continue to be offered. Netflix’s highest tier subscription that allows up to four simultaneous streams and 4k content, will continue to be offered for $11.99.

In May 2014 Netflix raised the price of its standard service by $1 and also launched a basic subscription tier.
